Copyright gives rights to the creators of material, enabling them to control re-use of their material (such as making copies, broadcasting and use the internet).
Under IFTS, information is defined as material and documents which are or can be subject to copyright protection as defined in the Copyright, Designs and Patent Act 1988. The Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005 use the term documents.
If a person wishes to re-use or reproduce copyright information, they must obtain permission from the owner of the copyright. Permission is often granted in the form of a licence agreement.
The handling of information in a way that it was intended. It does not include copying, adapting, developing, and commercially exploiting.
Reproduction of information in a way that it was not originally intended for. It includes copying, adapting, developing, adding value, broadcasting, commercially exploiting.
